I really think the huge development was the elimination of vacuum tubes, once you went solid state you got something you could swing and could practically be run on batteries. A WWII era mine detector was also a tube unit but was hardly a recreational device, Confetrit - you have my admiration! Vacuum tubes and portable electronics did come together for a while but never with the popularity that transistors allowed. I have also heard of some old BFO units that were tube based being used to locate caches of coins in the walls of buildings and such - I believe these caches were referred to as "Depression Banks".
